Karl van Ark

Карл Карлович Фан-Арк

9 September 1839 - 6 September 1902 (also spelled Karel van Ark)

Born in St. Petersburg to a Dutch organist, Karl van Ark studied piano with Theodor Leschetizky and composition with Nikolai Zaremba.

From 1862 he taught as an assistant to Leschetizky at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, becoming a professor in 1873.

His piano students included composers Sergei Bortkiewicz, Nikolai Tcherepnin and Artur Lemba, Shura's mother Lydia Cherkassky, Evgeny Raphof, and briefly, for about a year, Anna Yesipova.
