Samvel Alumyan

Самвел Сумбатович Алумян

3 May 1941 - 7 September 1987

Born in Yerevan, Alumyan studied with Yakov Flier at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1964. From 1968 he worked as Flier's assistant, and taught his own class from 1973. He became a docent in 1979.

He placed third at the 1963 Prague Spring Competition, and shared first prize with Radu Lupu at the 1967 George Enescu Competition.

His recordings include Brahms, Beethoven, Britten, Chopin, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and several records with Leonid Kogan.

Among his students were Ksenia Knorre and Mikhail Nikeshichev.
